Under the Skin: On Taboos and Tattoo Machines

Tattoos were long regarded as the stuff of rebels and thugs. Often a display of criminal exploits and gang affiliations or the markings of vulgar sailors, this artform had long found ill-favor amongst most average citizens. Nowadays, with the growing openness around the world, tattooing has gained popularity amongst even conservative types. Typically negative perceptions on tattooing have declined in recent years and has been seen as a means of self expression and personal exploration. As exciting and, at the same time, intimidating as skin-art can be, if done right, can be a positive, rewarding experience.

Often times, people enter into the experience tattooing with misconceptions and bad advice from people they know. The whirr of the tattoo machine and the prospect of having a number of different tattoo needles pierce your skin can be intimidating but if you take a moment to look into it, you’ll find that many of the mysteries and fears may just melt away. You might even be brave enough to try traditional maori tattoos! This is not to say that talking with family, friends, and neighbors has no value but do take the time to sit down with a tattoo artist in a reputable shop to talk about your concerns. Try and get to know the process, the parts of the tattoo machine, the purpose of an autoclave, the importance of sterilization, those dang tattoo needles, and of course, the masterpiece you want to place on your skin. Don’t skimp on the tattoo itself, invest in something that is meaningful, and if you can, have the artist design a custom piece for you. You’ll find that it may become more than just a visceral experience but also something spiritual as well!

There are many stories of drunken, spontaneous tattoos, and flights of fancy that lead to shameful reminders of a bad decision. With the right attitude and some good consideration and thought, your experience at the local shop can grow into a fulfilling and rewarding hobby that can turn your body into the canvas for your own works of art!
